Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios have officially announced today that 26-year-old British actor
Andrew Garfield (
Boy A, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, The Social Network) has been cast as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man in
Marc Webb’s 3D
Spider-Man reboot. Garfield beat out
Jamie Bell;
Josh Hutcherson;
Alden Ehrenreich;
Frank Dillane.
Kick-Ass star
Aaron Johnson and
Anton Yelchin (
Terminator: Salvation,
Star Trek) for the role. While Garfield might be one of the least known of the possible choices, he is probably the most talented actor on the short list.
On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”
