Dhoni in his avatar as CSK captain received a silver plate from the club President and was also inducted as an honorary member of the MCC, a venerable 164-year-old institution which has the motto "Sports - a way of life."
It was a rare honour which has been previously bestowed on only three Indian Test legends - Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar.
Several other Test cricketers from Tamil Nadu are full members of the club.
Four of Dhoni's former India and CSK teammates were present on the occasion and also received mementoes - S Badrinath, L Balaji, R Ashwin and Hemang Badani.
The occasion was kickstarted by a highlights reel depicting the journey of the Super Kings during the first three editions of the IPL.
No prizes for guessing which part of the video brought the house down - it was MSD's stunning assault against Irfan Pathan in Dharamsala earlier this year which was instrumental in CSK storming into the semi-final.
Mr N Srinivasan, BCCI Secretary and owner of the Super Kings, spoke on the occasion and praised the charisma, leadership and management of Dhoni.
