The FIFA World Cup 2010 third place match pits European powerhouse Germany against surprise South American contender Uruguay. The third place match is to be played in Johannesburg on Saturday, July 10.

Road to the Semifinals

Uruguay beat South Korea 2-1 in the round of 16 in a tough hard-fought match, and then played that marathon quarterfinal match against Ghana, winning on penalty kicks 4-2 to advance to the semifinals. La Celeste then lost to the Dutch 3-2 in an exciting semifinal match.
Germany lost in the second game of group play when they simply could not get their offense on track and lost to Serbia 1-0. Since that low point Germany has surged and won all their games until their semifinal loss to Spain, including a 4-1 thrashing of England in the round of 16 and a 4-0 mauling of Argentina in the quarterfinal round.

Injuries and Penalties/Suspensions

Except for the pulled muscle of star Diego Forlan (questionable for the match) Uruguay is back to almost full strength after being missing a couple of critical players in the Semifinal match against the Netherlands, bringing a smile to the face of coach Óscar Tabárez. Midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro is still likely out with a right foot injury, but defender and team captain Diego Lugano is likely to return as are Jorge Ciro Fucile and Luis Suarez after serving penalty suspensions. They do have two defenders, Caceres and Pereira, playing with yellow cards in this game.
Germany is also relatively injury free, with the exception of striker Miroslav Klose (questionable), with no suspensions and only a couple of yellow cards to worry about. They are also getting back striker Thomas Mueller (penalty card suspension in last game) who has four goals in the World Cup 2010.

Strategy

Germany is likely to try and control the middle again, and hope to come up with some creative offense that way. That said, look for Germany (especially Klose or Podolski) to play some aggressive offense if they get the chance early as they would dearly love to put one up on Uruguay in the initial minutes. Uruguay is likely to come out and play a little more aggressively than they have so far in the World Cup, both because they are back at near full strength, and there is really nothing to lose at this point.
